National Library :

First of all, i don't like to go to library at all! Because i always forgot to return the books and end up with .... (you should know what happened) :D

Well, since young i was pretty interested in how they are able to track what books we borrowed with the machine. Returning books, we just have to go to any library and dump our books there and they will know which library we borrowed from and returned it for us. Which means we do not have to go back to the same library to return, save a lot of time for us *thumbs up*

Old and Tattered Books
Long Queues
Untidy Shelves
Unfriendly Staffs
Took a long time to find books

Today's Libraries: With the help of RFID BORROWING MACHINE

$47 million were saved, mainly from manpower cost
No waiting time for library users
Faster stock-taking, tracking of items that are misplaced or bound for other branches,book suppliers and the warehouse
Books borrowed from one branch can be returned at other branches

The new system was started in Bukit Batok Community Library in 1998

Smart Shelf

Current state:

• Library patrons take longer time to locate books on shelf
• Library catalogue unable to track books on shelf although listed as available
• Current system unable to monitor browse preference
• Inventory of collection is not kept up-to date

Objective:

Develop an effective on-shelf tracking system using RFID technology to enable Accurate and faster access to library materials and tracking their usage within the library

What Smart Shelf do?

• Support remote activation via wireless gateway
• Detects and read RFID-tagged items
• Interprets item status
– On shelf, off shelf, misplaced
– Addition, removal of item from shelf
• Updates item status in central server
• Provides API for application integration
